Chapter 2: Pack Your Bags, You�re *Officially* On Vacation

��Elliot stepped off the bus and started walking down the street towards his house. Every few seconds he�d hear the faint echo of a shout in the distance, from the direction of the local park where the paranormal enthusiasts had taken to gathering daily. No doubt they were arguing over whose blurry photos looked most like the creepy little girl. Finally coming to his house, he crossed the lawn and opened the door.

��Ah, there you are...� Mr. Dunkel greeted him, pausing as he peered over his paper to see which of his children had just entered. �Elliot. We�ve got a bit of a surprise for you and Ellen.�

��Does it involve going to Swedekea again?� Elliot asked, simultaneously creeped out by the store and hoping to race Noah through it again, warning be damned. He closed the door.

��No, not this time, dear,� his mother chimed in as she entered the living room. �Mr. Verres called earlier today to get our okay for you and Ellen to go on a trip he�s planning.� She sat down in the chair next to her husband�s.

��A trip? Like a vacation, or something educational?�

��A weekend vacation � in Amity Park,� Mr. Dunkel stated as he folded up his paper. �You�ll need to pack for Ellen as well since she isn�t home yet.�

��Where�s Amity Park? I�ve never heard of it before.�

��Never heard of it!? It was all over the news a couple months back! It�s the home town of that kid that saved the world or something.�

��As for where it is, I think it�s in northern California,� his mother replied, sipping some tea. �Or possibly Missouri.�

��Elliot paused for a second, wondering whether or not he he should ASK about packing bathing suits, or just morphing them into existence if necessary, but quickly decided against it. After all, he might get a genuine answer. After noticing the two quizzical looks his parents were giving him, he quickly stammered: �Um, well thanks for letting us go, better get packed.� And rushed up the stairs to his room.

��As soon as he opened the door and saw the window, Elliot briefly flashed back to the previous night. After talking about their shared dream, he and Ellen had just stared out the window for almost an hour. �I sure hope you and Susan are wrong about this Ellen.� he thought to himself as he grabbed an old duffel bag out of the closet. �We could use a little fun around here. Well, less dangerous fun anyway.�

��Hurry up Elliot, our plane leaves at six o�clock!� Came the now familiar sound of Ellen�s voice from downstairs. �And Tedd�s dad want�s everyone there by three-thirty!�
��Crap!� Thinking quickly he grabbed two t-shirts, two pairs of pants, and the necessary undergarments for each of them and stuffed it all in the bag. �Anything else we need we can either buy or obtain magically.� He pulled the cord tight, slung the bag over his shoulder and shut the door.

��Please let this just be a weekend of fun.�

At the Verres residence...

��Alright. Now that everyone is here...� Mr. Verres began as he descended the stairs, laptop held securely under his arm. �We can begin the briefing.�

��Relax Elliot you know how Tedd�s dad is...� his thoughts were interrupted as Mr. Verres continued: �As you might have already guessed this is not a vacation.�

��Damn it!�

��Last night the Dewitchery Diamond was stolen...� Mr. Verres placed the laptop on the table he had setup earlier and opened it up, revealing two faces; both of which belonged to Vlad. �...by this person.�

��Don�t you mean �these people�?� Grace asked helpfully.

��No my dear, like you and your brothers, this man can transform.� He clicked to the next slide which continuously looped an animation of Vlad Masters transforming to and from his ghost form. �His birth name is Vlad Masters, but he has adopted the moniker of Plasmius for his ghost form. As far as the FBI is aware, he is one of two ghost-human hybrids, both of whom were created by one Jack Fenton.� He clicked again, bringing up a photo of Jack sporting his college mullet. He was obviously chasing after something while holding what looked like a fishing rod with a sniper scope mounted to it high above his head.

��You�re serious?� Susan asked, eyebrow raised. �He doesn�t look like he could make a sandwich.�

��Well they were both accident�s, but don�t be fooled: this man is a genius...� Mr. Verres cleared his throat before quickly and quietly adding: �in certain regards anyway.� He clicked to the next screen again, but this one was blank. �Now, we at the FBI aren�t entirely sure what Vlad is capable of, so I�m going to hand you --�

��Excuse me,� Elliot finally interrupted. �But why are you sending a bunch of teenagers to retrieve the Dewitchery Diamond? Don�t you have some kind of specialists you can send? Or, you know, ANYONE else?�

��Of course we have specialists!� He nearly shouted as he raised his hand to just over shoulder level with index finger raised, grinning all the while. �That�s why we�re sending you and Ellen! You two have more experience with the diamond than anyone else who is presently alive,� he paused, and as he noticed Elliot about to speak, added: �and not a statue. The rest of you are going because I need a cover story. And because you seem to make a good team.�

��Oh goody.�

��Anyway, where was I?� Looking back at the laptop he continued: �Ah yes, since we don�t know what Vlad is capable of I�m going to hand you over to a few people who do.�

��As soon as Mr. Verres finished his sentence the screen flickered to life and the webcam light turned green.

��Hey little sis!� Came the voice of Hedge, followed by the camera on the other end properly focusing on Hedge, Vladia, and Guineas. �And friends, I see.� Next he looked in Elliot�s direction. �How�ve ya been, cat?�

��SQUEE!� Guineas chimed in before Vladia pushed him out of the way.

��Enough chit chat, they don�t have time!� She shouted. �We�re just here to tell them what they need to know about other-Vlad.�

��Oh, right. Well we all had an encounter with Vlad Plasmius several years ago. He --�

�SQUEE SQU-SQUEE!�

�Yes I was getting to that Guineas. He was trying to make some kind of deal with Damian.�

��From what we heard, he was looking for some kind of artifact that would grant him infinite power, the Crown of Rage or something.� Vladia added. �Needless to say, Dami--�

��SQUEE SQUEE!�

��Guinieas if you want to say something, change to your human form, we�re not going to translate for you!� She pushed him out of frame this time. �Anyway, Damian wasn�t too thrilled about the idea of someone else being as powerful as him, so they fought.�

��How does he fight!?� Ellen and Elliot excitedly asked, as they felt something long dormant stir within them. They looked at each other for a second, then Ellen continued. �Can he fly? Possess people? Fire Beams of Energy?�

��Does he teleport? Have mastery of Illusions?� Justin wondered aloud.

��Is he fast? Or super strong? Can he make clones of himself?� asked Nanase, thinking the same thing as everyone else: how fun would it be to fight someone who has all of our powers and abilities, and then some.

��Is he super intelligent?� said Tedd, tossing his hat into the conversation.

��Or resourceful?� Sarah added.

��Well, we didn�t see much,� Hedge started before Grace, long-blue-haired-girl, or cat could say something. �But we do know he can create a shield out of energy, fire beams of energy from his hands, fly at high speed, and that while he can possess people, Seyunolu like us and Grace are immune. He�s also a great strate-�

��I�m sorry, but we need to wrap it up soon,� Mr. Verres interrupted. �It�s an hour and a half drive to the airport. It�s almost four now, and I have a few more slides.�

��Right. Bottom line,� Vladia concluded, �don�t let your guard down around him. He is just as twisted as Damian was, and as vicious as I used to be. Basically he wants to rule the world and will stop at nothing to do so.�

��And with that, I guess we�ll say goodbye and good luck. You make sure nothing happens to my sister, cat.� With that Hedge turned off their webcam, and the slide automatically advanced to a photo of Danny.

��When you get to Amity Park tonight, you should seek out this young man: Danny Fenton. He can help you.� He clicked to the next slide, which contained biographical info.

Okay, are there any question before we leave?� He paused for a moment. �Excellent, I�ve got a van waiting out front. If there�s anything you need to pick up now that you know the true nature of this trip, tell the driver. Oh, and make some time to have fun while you�re in Amity Park, California.�

��Well, at least there�ll be beaches.� Elliot thought and cracked a smile as everyone walked out the door.

First the good news: In Chapter 3 we get to Amity Park, and most of the chapter is focused on DP characters.
Now the bad news: Chapter 3 will probably be delayed because (see below).
The other-good/neutral news: I'm going to write a one shot fic before starting Chapter 3 of EGhS.

I kind of figure it's a moral thing. You be a better person for yourself and society, you're guarantee a prime spot in a kickin' afterlife. What's weird is that in the Christian faith (which I think extends to Catholicism as well, but I don't know much about that to confirm) is that despite your goals to achieve as much redemption as possible, Jesus has already died for all our sins thousands of years back. I often thought about that. If we reach Heaven, we're in a state of complete and utter bliss. Whatever we do, it has no consequences: we're all just happy. Something I wonder is, will we be so blindingly cheerful that we will have no free will to do anything else but? Have we succumb to, as they say, "Ignorance is Bliss?" I'm a cynical and cold-hearted, so having to smile 24/7 makes me cringe.

I try not to think about it (especially since being Christian, I fear any further questioning will get a lightning bolt to my ass), but I have had questions like this before in my head.

One theological niggle you'd have to explain to apply the idea to the Ghost Zone, though, would be that the ghosts appear to have free will and the ability to act, allowing them the opportunity to commit more sins after death. This either extends their sentence in the GZ until they "suffer enough" before they can pass on, requires a new "final judgment" when they transition from the GZ to their final destination, or sidesteps their final judgment and allows them to sin "off the books" after being judged at death.

For anyone who isn't quite as up on theological Christian backwaters: Limbo where people with lesser sins are lightly punished until they qualify for Heaven. I never was too sure about the idea of purification/redemption through suffering to atone for sins committed during life. I mean how does that make you any better of a person or more pure of soul/spirit? How does any amount of pain and suffering actually make up for, or undo your actual actions in life?

And only those in Purgatory will be can be redeemed by their torment: those souls damned to Hell suffer greater torment, and will never make it to Heaven. Assuming that suffering makes up for anything, why doesn't it help those in Hell? Doesn't their torment make up for anything, or are their sins different somehow, and can't be redeemed?

But then there's Limbo. How is that fair? A lot of those people, like the unbaptized infants and those who died before Christ or before word of Christianity reached where they lived never had any choice in the matter. And the otherwise people in the wrong religion? All you can say is 'sucks to be them'? It's not like there's any real way to tell which one is right, and how realistic is it to expect people to completely over turn and cast off the way they were raised, the beliefs of their families, friends, and national/ethnic identity? I mean, c'mon!

(Fortunately, later classes in religion philosophy & morality went a lot better: more interesting, fewer dogmatic answers - Not that I'm any more religious or spiritual now than I was back in Sunday school, probably less so. But at least I'm better informed about what I'm ignoring )

Keep in mind I did not say EVERY ghosts are the results of humans who have died and ended up that way. I should have stated that I was generalizing (my bad), but the topic wasn't "is there other forms of Afterlife" or "Are all ghosts dead?" (though they're still interesting stuff to talk about, of course, and I might wanna elaborate on this further: for example, I always like think the Ghost Zone is Purgatory) - especially the latter because I believe ghosts of the DP world are either people who have died or as Hartman stated, "monsters of a different dimension".

I'm just curious to know what others think of Danny's human self in "TUE", whether if he died, would he become a ghost if his ghost half was ripped from him, or another soul (if you believe there is another Afterlife besides the GZ), or nothing at all. Er, you already answered it, Doc, but I just wanted to clarify, is all. But yeah, just something that's been bothering me a bit.

But they didn't say that everyone in general doesn't become ghosts, nor any reason why one person specifically might or might not become one. So sure, Danny's human half might have become a ghost. Or he might not. Or he might have come back in a form so different as to be unrecognizable to anyone who knew him in life.

If you're looking for a story, the ghost of Danny's human half showed up a couple times in Firefury's epic tetralogy.

Here's a thought for you, if you want to go somewhere different with this:
What if everyone has some amount of innate energy or liveliness or life-force or strong enough mana or aura, or who are possessed of more "soul" if you will. People with more "soul" might be more creative, or passionate, or dramatic, or live larger than life, or whatever. With enough of this energy, you might even be able to enact certain physical changes - aka magic (I can only assume that's where Freakshow fit in). When you're alive, this energy or soul is sustained and enriched by your body and mind and spirit. When you die, it's freed from your mortal form, and whatever "you" that's left then consumes that store of life-force directly.

Most people don't have all that much, and so they either never manifest as a ghost, or are so weak as to be invisible/inaudible/intangible (think of the movie Ghost or Ghost Dad). Some people, who have a little more soul or stronger soul, stick around for a longer time, before passing on. The strongest are practically physical and have all sorts of ways to fire off the their energy. If they stick around long enough, they might be able to find new ways and new sources to absorb and use energy, such as finding a natural portal and going to live in the Ghost Zone's ubiquitous ectoplasm field.

If that's the case, then maybe the accidents that gave Danny and Vlad their powers, didn't actually create anything new (new powers, a new ghost self, etc) Instead, the blast released from the creation of an artificial Ghost Zone Portal actually just super charging their own, natural, pre-existing "soul". Allowing it to come to the surface and interact with the world around them with it and through it. When they get tired, or sick, or knocked out, their "life-force" burns less brightly, and their ghost form collapses they "transform" back into their normal selves.

And if that's the case, then when Danny's and Vlad's empowered soul-self was torn away, then yes, they each would have been soul-less, and unable to form a ghost. In fact, Danny did die when that life-force was removed, but Vlad survived, though in a much less energetic, less passionate form - huddled away, hiding in the ruins of his mansion - hardly living at all (less soul, d'you see?), so would have had some thin shreds left. Maybe Vlad might have regenerated a bit over the decades, but he was pretty lacking in force of personality even when the kids met him in the future. In which case he might have manifested briefly or not at all.

Yes? No? Maybe?
Oh well, it was just a wild notion that occurred to me as I was reading your post.

I agree more or less. I am not sure if everyone who dies, here or DP land becomes a ghost... but I would think that those who have been traumatized, aren't ready to 'move on' or have something they need to accomplish might indeed enter the ghost zone.

Having said that, this is why in the 'Vlad Ruler of the World' discussion I thought that Vlad would have to be very careful about offing any of the Fenton's or their friends. Wronged people who know about and how the ghost zone would be very dangerous to him.

Something I thought of that we can discuss.

Despite what Hartman said, DP has established that when humans die, they do become ghosts. Now, we have no idea if other concepts of the Afterlife exists in DPverse, but I keep thinking of the alternate timeline of "The Ultimate Enemy".

When Vlad split Danny's ghost self from him and eventually died in his hand, what happened to the human Danny? Did he have a soul? Did it go to the Ghost Zone or another Afterlife? Or was that simply it? That body was all there is.

Just something I've been thinking of.

Hrm. Having sudden flashbacks to the (thankfully) short lived un-missed "Highlander: The Animated Series", Saturday morning schlock from the mid-90's. Meteorite, wasted post-apocalyptic landscape, most of humanity wiped out, immortal evil overlord with mystic abilities...

( ...Well to be fair, it wasn't all bad. It was actually kind of dark, and had a nice appreciation of ambiguous morality. But on the whole, if you don't remember it, you aren't missing anything. )

I like the idea of this post-apocalyptic world if the asteroid did hit and how Danny is affected by it. Like I said before, I see two scenarios:

1. He joins up with a powerful dictator-like government where he is tasked to carry orders for them and keep as much peace as possible to whoever needs it. He's trying to be the hero and I can foresee two things happening. He will either realize the government is a dictatorship and find their brutal methods unmoral. He will rebel against them. OR Danny will become so succumb by them that he will embrace the role of a powerful being who will keep the "puny humans" under bay. Just imagine, a 14-year-old boy enduring and witnessing anarchy, murder, greed, and other questionable methods that humanity has managed to keep in bay until now. He's encountered a lot of stress for an once ordinary teen, but now...it might break his poor, fragile little mind.

Or...

2. Danny will NOT be part of the government. Instead, he will join a freedom fighter or rebellion to battle against it while trying his best to ensure the future of humanity. Somehow, I find the first one more exciting. Tee Hee, especially the second option of the first because I like deconstructions.
