Obviously phase to ghost is not hard, painful or tiring. They did it for the most trivial reasons. Have a big warehouse or garage several hundred feet above your work area where the equipment you do buy can be delivered and then just phase it down to your perfectly secure workshop. But most likely he did have a few built like that so there would most likely be a ton of equipment and stuff stashed where only another half ghost could reach it and repurpose it for other uses.

You know why he can perfectly parallel park? He cheats! Since no one pays the least bit of attention to what other cars are doing, anytime the space is tight Danny could just 'phase' the car for a second. Then backup enough, straighten up and 'phase' back. I wish * I * could de-materialize my car occasionally when parallel parking.

Any casual on looker the would dismiss or rationalize the 'apparent' momentary disappearance of the car as a blink or glare or something.

Something feels off tonight. Not in a way that feels dangerous or wrong, the way it does when someone's out to get you, just� off.

At first, I'm thinking it's on account I woke up an hour earlier than normal, but I've gotten up earlier than this without a hitch, so that can't be it. Nobody's called the law on us as far as I can tell, and there's nobody around that ain't supposed to be. It's just me and Trochee.
And also the corpse of the fella we ate last night stretched out behind the sofa, the one who owned the place, but he don't really count.
My best guess is I'm just not used to breaking into other folks' houses to find dinner and then sleeping in them. Normally, I just sleep under a bridge or an underpass with a blanket over my head to keep the sun out, but Trochee's tagging along now and he's accustomed to breaking into places for the day.

Being in a different sleeping space has gotta be what's eating me. Sure, that must be it.

Still, I don't wanna stick around any longer than I have to, and as soon as the sun sets, I go lookin' for Trochee.

I find him curled up at the back of the closet, nestled beside a vacuum in an explosion of white towels that were probably stacked neatly before he got to them. It's easy to see how people tend to trust him enough to let him into their house, since he kinda looks like he just limped out of a Dickens novel, what with the hat too big for his head and crippled foot from a factory accident and big sunken in eyes. Of all people to suddenly jump on you from a rafter and start chomping jugulars, he's the last one you'd expect (if he doesn't have bloodstains on his teeth anyway). Course, at the moment he looks like a corpse someone stashed to hide evidence more than anything else.

"C'mon, Trochee. Up and at 'em, there's trains and breakfast to catch." He pushes into the towels and pretends not to hear me, so I poke him with my toe a couple of times. When that doesn't work I try poking him in the eye, and he curls up his lip in a little fanged snarl and makes a grouchy hissing noise like someone let the air out of his tires. "Aw, go soak your head."

"It's already past eight; we shoulda cut outta here by now. The train leaves at eleven, we're losing moonlight here."

He finally sits up and glowers at me from under a bird's nest of filthy yellowy hair, "So I'll get up at ten. Hell's bells, Ira! The moon ain't even high yet and besides, my foot hurts."

"Your foot always hurts, and besides you were practically running on it yesterday."

"Yeah, that's how come it hurts again." He thinks for a second, then frowns, "�Hold on a second. I thought we don't gotta be in Chattanooga until Thursday."

Rats. I was actually hoping he'd forget that.

Trochee wriggles out from towels and comes to stand next to me in the hallway, head cocked to the side, "If we got three days to spare, I don't get why we can't just hang around here in the meantime. We can't we just catch the train tomorrow? It's not gonna disappear into thin air is it?"

I don't really have an answer for that. To be honest, he's right. It would be better to just hunker down here for the next few days and take the opportunity to enjoy the house. It's been a long time since either of us had some real time to relax. I don't think either of us has seen any television since the moon landing, and I really wanna take a gander at the stiff's music collection. And movie collection.

Like he's a mind reader, Trochee smiles his sweetest swindler smile and says real casual like, "I wonder if the stiff we ate last night has a videocassette player." When I act like I don't know what he's talking about, his grin just gets bigger, "And you know, I think this guy has Lawrence of Arabia."

"That's not gonna work," I tell him, hoping that it's the truth. "I don't care if he has a whole theater in his house, I don't wanna stay here."
"But why?"

"Something� I dunno. Something doesn't feel right, like it's not how we left it. I just - quit lookin' at me like I'm taking crazy pills Trochee, I ain't kidding around here!"

He stares at me for a few minutes with a funny lopsided look, like his face can't decide to be frazzled or irritated or both. "Are we in some kind of trouble Ira?" he says, in a small voice.

Trochee's being worried calms me down, somehow. I don't like the both of us being worried at once, especially over what's probably nothing. "No. No, we're not in trouble. Well, I don't think. Something's just bothering me about this house. Maybe there's spooks in it or something. Or maybe I am loosing my marbles. I mean, that does happen to folks like us eventually. Undeath does that."

"Don't be stupid, you're only a hundred and forty. That stuff won't happen for another fifty years at least." The smaller vampire grins, "And everyone knows there's no such thing as spooks."

We agree to stay here for at least another day, if for no other reason than it's better to hunker down here than to rush to Chattanooga when we're not due there for a while anyway. And also because I really do want to see Lawrence again.

But when the two of us get to the living room, that odd feeling starts creepin' up on me again. Stronger this time, hovering above us ominous and dreadful. It doesn't feel so strange this time though, because now I can identify what's bothering me. It's the same apprehension I get when I'm in another vampire's territory, like when you're in someone's house uninvited.

But naturally, that's impossible. I mean, it's like I said before, the only ones in the house are me and Trochee and -

"Say, Ira did you move the stiff?"

"No. Why?"

"He's by the stereo. You left him by the sofa last night, right?"

I left him by the sofa fifteen minutes ago, actually. And in a completely different position. The fella's leaning against the wall now, and it looks like he's clenching his teeth... teeth that are starting to look red and nasty in the gums, like when a baby's teeth are growing in. Or, in this case, where fangs are growing in.

"Trochee?"

"Yeah?"

" I think we might have to stay for more than another night."

Opening her eyes a crack, the girl managed an annoyed glare. "For the love of.... You can stop the facade ... any time now.... But, anyway, your information is old. I don't work for CRS ... anymore."

"Oh, really?" Wood asked sarcastically. "The last I checked, you seemed to be an esteemed member on their list...."

"Their ... hit list," she snarked in deadpan.

"That would be humans for you, turning on their own when they're not busy turning on us," the doctor said bitterly, snapping on a pair of latex gloves. He pulled over a tray with an assortment of bottled concoctions, carefully picking out a few while the girl watched warily. "In any case, you'll be keeping your ink-stained hands to yourself once we're done here."

Reiki slowly turned her head away, already blurry vision swimming with tears, too reluctant to admit that he was probably right.

A sudden pinch in her arm prompted a frustrated breath and a flinch. A few more left her feeling weighty and somewhat delirious before she fully succumbed to the effects of the drugs.

Showing Danny able to fly a jet, even if it seemed out of nowhere would be one of those moments for me where I would have accepted it. Unlike say, Skulker and Ember suddenly dating in "Girls' Night Out", Danny's interest in flying (if not for NASA) wouldn't have felt so out of left field for me because it would be in-character. Granted, I would probably have had Danny say to his friends, "What? I started taking lessons" so we at least get some comprehension that he didn't learn out of nowhere.

The whole learning to drive thing was something I felt lacking in the show. Jazz apparently had her license, and turned up with her own car in later seasons. Even if Danny or Tucker couldn't afford to get their own wheels, just learning would be of interest to them. And even if none of them were interested for whatever reason, then the A-listers at school should have been all over it. One way or another, it seems like it should have come up. But I guess that wouldn't have resonated with their target demographic as well.

Scary, I actually thought the same on both accounts (on Danny begging his 'rents to teach him to pilot and the driving license issue). I was slightly praying Danny and his friends would have aged significantly to start learning. It doesn't have to be military, but the big, slow, passenger and cargo jets won't get you the kind of high-g, high performance, fast maneuvering experience they're looking for.

Realistically, a military (of one country or another) owns and flies 90+% of the fighter jets and test planes that do provide that experience. The major aerospace contractors (such as Boeing, or Lockheed-Martin) have a small number of test pilots, and there are probably some stunt and aerobatic pilots that might have some experience too, but neither category gets as much or as regular experience as the military pilots.

Full immersion flight simulators and PC based simulation software is essential in learning and maintaining the skills, but wouldn't be sufficient in itself.

Actually, Neo, I'd have to go the other way, and say that unless they showed Danny learning to fly or had established that he could already fly the jet, then he probably shouldn't have been able to fly the space plane, either. Although that would have required certain changes to the events in that episode...

Come to think of it, that would be a good parallel to more normal teenage milestones and rights of passage. Most kids beg their parents to teach them to drive, or let them practice once they have a handle on the basics. Have Danny begging Maddie to teach him to pilot the jet!

I wasn't aware if had to be strictly military jets you had to learn in order to be in NASA. But I did feel very irked in the episode "Reality Trip" where Danny had no problem landing a space shuttle, yet could not fly his parents' jet plane (a problem that didn't remedy itself until the series finale). Yes, I know he had a space shuttle simulator on his computer (and maybe his parents' built their jet a tad differently), but surely that would have at least set him up to take control of the Fenton Jet plane? He even showed magnificent skills with the other Fenton tools in the episode, but the minute they reach the jet plane, he's clueless.

Bluemoonalto said it best when she complained about Tucker's misuse with technology in "Fanning the Flames" - Danny is supposedly an "expert" in space shuttle piloting, why mess and deter what could come naturally to him with a similar vehicle? It would have been a really awesome scene to see Danny command it with ease.

Eh, since I was just lamenting the lack of interesting on-topic conversations around here lately, I thought I should actually, you know, post something instead of just bitching about other people not posting

So here's a continuation of my earlier series of posts on possible collegiate choices for various DP characters. Today's subject: Danny, our hero!

First, the butt-covering set up.

I see three general scenarios.

I) So, Danny's mentioned he's interested in being an astronaut, right? Well, shoot for the stars as they say.

II) His other major interest is obviously ghosts.

III) Lastly, of course, everyone's favorite option: Something else entirely!

(Ia) As Danny's an American, and the show was set in the US, aimed at a US audience, and written and produced by Americans, I'll assume Danny had the the American space program in mind. So start by considering NASA and the shuttle (and whatever comes after).

If you want to be a shuttle pilot (and presumably the eventual replacement), the requirements include a lot of fast-jet experience, which basically means a career in the military flying fighters. With no guarantees, and slim chances, you'd only really do this if that's what you want to do, not as a means to an end. Danny has never expressed any interest in a military career, and his experiences with the GiW seem likely to have soured him on the US govt "powers what be" in general. And that's before you factor in his super-hero career and exotic ghost-powers.

So, if not a pilot, then perhaps a mission specialist? The requirements start with at least one PhD (figure that's 10 years right there) specializing in something NASA will need at that point (aerospace engineering and pure science are good bets), and a great deal of work experience in the field, preferably with cross-over in another useful field. And given the general pool of applicants, it's not enough to merely be qualified, you have to avoid being disqualified for any of a laundry list of reasons, many having nothing to do with you or even the job at hand, including your ability at public speaking, being telegenic, PC racial/gender balances, politics, etc. Oh, and NASA is extremely adverse avoidable risk factors, including those related to unusual "medical conditions"... like, oh, being half-ghost?

So yeah, NASA isn't looking real promising.

(Ib) Okay, if not the government run space program, there's a lot of really exciting stuff going on in commercial and private space these days.

Did you see the unveiling of WhiteKnightTwo / SpaceShipTwo last week? They're already have an extensive waiting list for seats on their sub-orbital hops. SpaceX has a contract to send supplies to the ISS in their automated cargo vehicle starting next year, with follow up plans for a human-rated module in the future. Both Boeing and Lockheed are conducting feasibility studies to adapt their existing heavy launch rockets to support a human-rated upper stage, as well. Google is the major sponsor for a Lunar X-Prize robotic challenge And NASA has been sponsoring a whole series of competitions open to commercial ventures and the general public, for assorted exciting technologies and milestones.

Assuming these companies eventually do get people to orbit (and so far, no non-govt-organization has gotten further than a short suborbital hop), their needs and requirements will be quite a bit different than those of NASA, and will probably (eventually) support larger pool of job slots. Combine the two, and the entry barrier, while high, will probably be much lower than for a NASA astronaut. If Danny can figure out what those companies are going to need, he could conceivable pre-position him self when selecting a major, and get in on the ground floor either out of college, or after a couple of years in a related field.

Danny hasn't really shown all that much interest in science and math, the kind of interest you'd expect if you wanted to graduate with a degree in AeroSpace Engineering, or Environmental Systems, Chemical Engineering (i.e. rocket fuels) or something. I won't rule it out, as the show didn't really spend much time on their classes and grades and homework and stuff, and even if Danny didn't care all that much in HS, he might be more motivated when it's directly related to what he wants do to and his major classes. But frankly, Tucker would seem like a better bet for an engineer, especially if robotics, controls, AI, or something are the key to getting in.

(Ic) Forget all that realism and science and technology and junk. This whole show ran on a wacky, rubber-science premise, so why should this be any different?

Danny's already been to space a couple of times! The Axion rocket pack + ghost levitation/flight got him to orbit, and by taking a short cut through the GZ, the trio + Vlad became the most distant humans in history. Hell, Danny's dad, with Vlad's money, designed and built an stupidly fast interplanetary rocket in a week or so. I don't know what they did with the ship after the Disasteroid passed, but that's not the kind of thing you just throw away. Danny can borrow the keys, and go to space anytime he wants to. (Maybe pick out a nice "Make Out Crater Rim" with good view of the crescent Earth, for a date with Sam some time?)

If you can do that then there's no end of ways to make that your job and every day life. Servicing satellites, clearing out junk from the more important orbits, delivering satellites/robots/supplies to orbit, or the moon, or the planets, etc. And that just if you don't reserve it for long drives on the weekend or after work, and get a more "down to Earth" job (har de har har).

If Danny does want to make a career out of it, some business classes wouldn't hurt, but honestly, if you (or your family and friends) are the only ones who can supply that kind of technology and services, it almost doesn't matter. You can hire a COO, or talk to some VCs with the business sense, or ask Sam's parents to handle the money, or whatever. Other than that, some classes in engineering wouldn't hurt, probably AE or some flavor of space sciences maybe. But it's all new tech invented by FentonWorks, really, so start with whatever Jack and Maddie got their degrees in and then let them train you up; call it an apprentice ship. A pilot's license wouldn't hurt either, although I don't believe the FCC actually regulates operating a space ship.

So I think that more or less covers the case of if Danny wants to 'do space' for a living.

There were no more grids for several twists and turns following. Finally, another patch of dim light shone up on the dusty ceiling, and both Vicky and Timmy peered down, blinking. "There she is!" the brunet noted.

"She looks pretty beat up," the redhead said quietly, "Maybe even...drugged."

The small boy looked up, then back down. "What do we do? Do you have a spell or something that'll help her?"

Glancing up in thought, Vicky replied, "Hmm...Decleary might do it �" then let her gaze fall, "but I'm not sure if I'm close enough for it to work. And I'm too tired to do another non-contact Flow Break. Plus, what if �"

She pressed her lips tightly together, the two of them leaning back as they heard a door open, seeing movement from the left side of the room.

"Cool, then let's go!" the brunet declared, taking the lead as he crawled in the opposite direction.

"...FLOHOW BREAK!" Seeing light flash from one of the rooms below, Timmy peered down to see the younger redhead standing tall, eyes closed, hands above her head cupped around a now-fading ball of energy. Letting her arms drop, she looked down at herself. Making a tight fist, she growled, "When I find him, that guy is gonna be so �"

"Vicky!"

"Twerp?" she interrupted herself, looking up.

"Oh man, are we glad to see you!" the small boy said with a smile, which faded to a puzzled frown, "What's going on?"

Turning to face them, Vicky explained, "One of those guys brought me in here, hypnotized me, and locked the door! I've been trying to get out of here for hours � what happened to you?"

"Same thing, minus the hypnotizing," the brunet replied, then smirked, "Lemme guess, he mentioned something about your idol and you went all fangirly and couldn't help yourself, right?"

In the three-second beat, Timmy backed up off the grate, holding out an arm, "Stand back!" True to rote, a blast of summoned fire burst up through the grate, blocking the passageway. When it subsided, he noted, "Hey, cool! That was just like a videogame �" looking down with a grin, "do it again!"

"FLARE ARROW!" A round of pointy fire bursts pelted the metal grid, which amazingly still held.

Looking down at her upturned palms, now Vicky smiled, "Hey, it worked!" looking up again, "Thanks, twerp!"

"What worked?"
"Nevermind. Make way, shrimp brigade, I'm comin' up!"
"What?"
"LEVITATION~!"

Soon enough, the redhead had floated to the ceiling where she quite easily pulled down one side of the grate, slipping up through it, and squeezing into the vent ahead of the pink-hatted one. She crawled a ways, then stopped. "Crap, I don't know where I'm going!" glancing over her shoulder as she didn't have much room to turn her head, "You'd better lead the way, Tim."

"Okay," the small boy agreed, moving forward again. As he began to pass beneath her, he shuddered a bit with a flinch, "Creepy, creepy, creepy..." Opening his eyes, he mused at her midriff "The belly of the beast..." and mischievously poked it.

In the next room, where the metal vent's path was bared, an imprint of the brunet's face appeared with a metallic clunk that masked Vicky's squeak.

"And I'm Kelli!" the girl piped up, eyes arching.

The boy smiled back. "My name is Macario, and this is my guardian, Alejandro," he added, jabbing his thumb toward the tiger on his back. "You trying to get out too?"

"We're lookin' for my sister, 'cause nobody's tellin' us what's goin' on," Kelli explained.

"Oh...," Macario said softly, pausing a moment and glancing behind him, eyes blinking rapidly a few times. He turned to face them again. "Alejandro says we should help you find her since you helped us, and then we all get out of here, yes?"

Grabbing her hand, the pink-hatted one quickly swung his free hand down and grabbed the Latino boy's, flinching as the girl tugged both of them back into the relatively spacious vent.

Giving his head a clearing shake as he sat up, Timmy turned to the boy and said, "Hey, I don't think we even got your name," smiling, "mine's Timmy."
